APC House of Reps Primaries: Major Winners and Surprising Defeats

The APC held its House of Representatives primaries on May 16, 2026. Voters turned out in large numbers as seasoned lawmakers and fresh aspirants battled for nominations. Key figures won tickets with ease: Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu returned unopposed. Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudasiru Obasa and Finance Committee Chair James Faleke clinched nominations. First-time candidate Yusuf Buhari secured Katsina. Other winners included Jimi Benson, Yusuf Gagdi, Ndudi Elumelu and Olumide Osoba. Notable defeats featured House Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere in Edo and four sitting members from Imo state. Popular businessman Cubana Chief Priest also lost his bid. Highly contested races in Delta, Ogun and Plateau saw new faces emerge. While many primaries were peaceful, protests erupted in Kaduna, Osun and Jos South over alleged manipulation. Some aspirants accused party officials of withholding materials from key strongholds.
