Nigeria's Student Accommodation Crisis: Over 1 Million Beds Missing

Nigeria's Student Accommodation Crisis: Over 1 Million Beds Missing

Nigeria has a shortfall of more than 1 million student hostel beds, according to a new Africa Student Housing Report by Forten & Company. Less than 9% of Nigerian undergraduates live in formal purpose-built housing. The country has only 2,839 completed purpose-built student accommodation beds, with over 45,000 more under development. As a result, over 90% of students are forced into informal off-campus housing that is often overcrowded and expensive. Across Africa, only about 250,000 formal student accommodation beds serve an estimated 25 million students. South Africa leads with over 90% of the stock, while Kenya and Ghana are growing their sectors. In Nigeria, private developers and government initiatives like the Renewed Hope Student Housing Project aim to add 38,400 beds at 24 public institutions. Experts say public-private partnerships are key to meeting the needs of over 2.1 million enrolled students.

Blaming officials exclusively overlooks students' own efforts. In some regions, improvised hostels and community-led housing already deliver decent results.

Universities could partner with local builders to convert existing structures into affordable dorms. Small-scale projects can relieve pressure quickly and sustainably.
