Federal Health Nurses Threaten Nationwide Strike over Unpaid Allowances and Victimisation

Federal Health Nurses Threaten Nationwide Strike over Unpaid Allowances and Victimisation

The National Association of Federal Health Institution Nurses and Midwives (NANNM-FHI) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to federal health institutions. They demand the reinstatement of suspended unit leaders, reversal of alleged demotions, and restoration of teaching, call and shift allowances for nurses on CONHESS levels 7 and 8. The union also decried irregular salary payments and the collection of certificate verification fees at the Specialist Teaching Hospital. They have called on management to refund any fees already paid and honour the Memorandum of Understanding previously signed under the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment. Failure to meet these demands, according to the NANNM-FHI National Secretary, will force nurses across all federal health facilities into nationwide industrial action. The association stressed its commitment to quality healthcare but warned it will pursue lawful trade union measures to defend members’ rights and welfare. NANNM-FHI appealed to the Federal Government, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, and relevant hospital managements to resolve these issues promptly and avert a health sector disruption.

Absolutely, a strike could cause staffing gaps and seriously delay treatments until allowances get paid.

Their 72-hour deadline seems abrupt considering the complexity of unpaid allowances and allegations of victimisation.

Threatening a nationwide strike without clear backup plans could harm nurses' credibility more than help their cause.

Una go need ensure unit leaders' suspension reviews and allowance records are fully documented before any strike action.
