Plateau Commission Foils Illegal Trafficking of Pregnant Women and Minors to Ibadan Mines

Plateau Commission Foils Illegal Trafficking of Pregnant Women and Minors to Ibadan Mines

Operatives of the Plateau Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission intercepted three women — including two pregnant and one nursing mother — and 11 minors at an unlicensed motor park in Jos. The site had secretly operated for nearly ten years, funneling passengers to mining camps in Ibadan’s Sepeteri area. A whistleblower tipped off the commission, revealing that recruits boarded buses only on Tuesdays and Thursdays without paying fares. Organizers promised to cover travel costs by deducting six days of labour from the recruits’ wages once they arrived at the camps. Officials alerted security agencies after confirming the park’s illegality. Recruited children and women will be reunited with their families, while recruiters face police investigation. The commission urged community leaders and parents to report suspicious activities and emphasized the state government’s zero-tolerance stance on child labour.
