Fashola Urges Opposition to Accept Imperfect Elections, Strengthen Democracy

Former Lagos governor and ex-Minister Babatunde Fashola says no election can be flawless given the scale of Nigeria’s polling operations. Speaking at The Platform forum in Lagos on Democracy Day, he urged critics to focus on building stronger institutions rather than faulting every mishap. He explained that thousands of polling units must act in unison across diverse conditions, making perfect execution nearly impossible. Fashola noted that established democracies accept these limitations and work to improve processes instead of undermining results. He also warned that refusing to accept electoral outcomes weakens the role of opposition in democratic development. Fashola challenged citizens and leaders to ask, “What kind of democracy do we want?” and to nurture democratic culture beyond election day.
