New Abia Rule: Motorcycles in Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia to Be Impounded with ₦50,000 Fine

New Abia Rule: Motorcycles in Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia to Be Impounded with ₦50,000 Fine

The Abia State Government has directed its Harmonised Task Force and security agencies to impound any motorcycle found operating in the metropolitan areas of Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia. Riders must pay a ₦50,000 fine within 30 days for each impounded bike or risk forfeiture to the state. All motorcycles, both private and commercial, must be registered under the state’s ongoing vehicle enumeration programme. Operators will receive reflective jackets or branded aprons with unique identification codes issued across the three senatorial zones. Under the new rule, courier and delivery bikes may carry goods but are prohibited from conveying passengers. The administration plans to work with transport unions and community groups to sensitise the public and ease the impact of the ban. Officials say the measure aims to strengthen security surveillance and curb criminal use of motorcycles in urban centres. Stakeholder consultations and media support have been enlisted to ensure smooth implementation.

Has anyone here ridden through Aba recently and noticed how this new impound rule might affect daily commuters?

Do we have any details on which Aba routes or checkpoints this impound rule will cover?

This fine amount seems disproportionately high and might push more riders into unregistered routes or illicit operations within those cities.

I understand the need for order, yet fining riders ₦50,000 seems heavy-handed and lacking consideration for everyday commuters.

Riders should register alternative routes or use designated parking points outside metropolitan areas to avoid steep fines and potential impoundment.
