bPOWERd Launches Pay-Per-Use Solar Battery Rental, Cutting Lagos Generator Costs by 70%
Nigeria’s generator-driven power economy forces millions to pay daily for light and cooling. Nearly half the population lacks grid access, and frequent outages have made generators a primary energy source. South African startup bPOWERd has opened pay-per-use solar battery rental hubs at seven Mobil stations in Lagos. Customers pay a refundable deposit, pick up a charged portable battery, then return and swap it when it runs down—no installation fees or long-term commitment. Rental rates start at ₦1,500 for a 300Wh unit and ₦3,000 for a 1,000Wh battery. That cuts typical daily generator fuel costs by about 70%, with zero noise or fumes. Early results show the service reached 60% of its six-month target within seven weeks. The rollout creates local sales roles and partners with Nigerian solar technicians. If it scales beyond Lagos, this model could transform how households and small businesses access reliable power across Nigeria.
