IGP Disu Convenes Emergency Security Conference, Unveils Major Police Reforms

IGP Disu Convenes Emergency Security Conference, Unveils Major Police Reforms — 1 of 4
1 / 4

On 5 May 2026, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, called an emergency meeting with senior managers across the Nigeria Police Force to address critical security challenges and strengthen accountability. He condemned the recent extrajudicial killing in Delta State, confirming the officers involved have been dismissed and will face criminal prosecution. He reinforced the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct and insisted no officer is above the law. The IGP highlighted April’s intelligence-led successes: arrests of hundreds of terror, robbery, cultism, kidnapping and murder suspects; rescue of 189 kidnapped victims; and recovery of firearms, ammunition and stolen vehicles. He also announced the creation of a new Violent Crime Response Unit and directed all Commissioners to deepen community policing through regular town-hall engagements.

I agree, clear accountability frameworks, regular performance reviews and community engagement can really curb abuses and boost security.

I really feel say body cameras plus clear performance reviews fit help cut abuses and boost security

I get the urgency, but condemning one incident hardly tackles systemic problems entrenched in the force's culture.

To ensure follow-through, they should publish a reform timeline with measurable milestones and allow independent monitoring by civil society.
