Benue State Crisis: Comparing Buhari and Tinubu Eras
Moderators, please stop silencing those of us with firsthand knowledge of the Middle Belt. My posts keep being deleted whenever I share this information. Show compassion and respect for the victims and their families. My analysis draws on humanitarian organisations, field data and news reports over the years. Beyond the numbers, there is a human story behind every statistic—families, villages and lives that were once normal. Under President Buhari (2015–May 2023), Benue experienced repeated farmer-herder clashes. In 2016 alone, over 1,200 people lost their lives. The New Year’s Day attacks in Guma and Logo in 2018 claimed more than 1,300 lives in just six months. Entire communities were displaced and lived in constant fear. Since President Tinubu took office in May 2023, the violence has intensified. Reports suggest over 6,800 deaths between 2023 and 2025, highlighted by the Yelewata massacre in June 2025. Whether under Buhari or Tinubu, the reality remains the same: uncertainty, fear and loss. Without real prevention and response, these tragedies will continue.
