Failed Governance and Migrant Scapegoating: A Warning for Nigeria
Across South Africa, frustrated citizens have taken justice into their own hands. Groups like Dudula blame migrants for economic hardship, housing shortages and rising crime while the government stumbles. When a state fails to secure jobs, homes and safety, citizens may target visible, vulnerable outsiders. Migrants cannot craft policy or create opportunities, yet bear the brunt of public anger. Nigeria has seen similar dynamics in ethnic and religious tensions. We must resist easy scapegoating and demand accountability from the institutions truly responsible.
