No Circus, No Monkeys: Kemi Badenoch’s Wake-Up Call for Nigerian Patriotism

I was moved when I saw Americans sing their anthem with tears and pride. It made me wonder why we often fail to show such love for Nigeria. When Kemi Badenoch spoke ill of the country that gave her a platform, it stung. Her words should not distract us. They should push us to look inward, ask tough questions, and reclaim our values. We raise children who ignore our flag and anthem. We tolerate leaders who steal public funds and seek medical care abroad. We lose our language, culture, and identity. Hypocrisy thrives when we only condemn others. Instead of falling for the circus over one statement, we must confront systemic issues. We need true patriotism in our homes and accountability from our leaders. No circus, no monkeys—let’s focus on building the Nigeria we all deserve.

What do you think would spark real pride in Nigerians to sing their anthem with genuine emotion like Americans do?

Totally! A little more spotlight on our heroes' stories could really stir the heart at anthem time.

I dey notice Americans belt their anthem with tears, but we seldom mirror that passion for Nigeria's struggles or victories.

Blaming Kemi Badenoch's remarks alone distracts us; the real issue is our inconsistent patriotism, not just her criticism.

We could start community anthem events at schools and workplaces to build shared pride and remind ourselves why we love Nigeria.
