New Orleans Sheriff Indicted Over Jailbreak That Freed 10 Inmates
A grand jury in New Orleans has handed a 30-count indictment to Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson. Investigators say poor management and failure to follow basic procedures allowed prisoners to slip through a hole behind a toilet and escape over a barbed wire fence. The jailbreak set off a month-long manhunt before all ten inmates were recaptured. Charges include malfeasance, obstruction of justice, and falsifying public records. Bond for the sheriff was set at $300,000 and she must surrender her passport and remain in the state. The sheriff’s chief financial officer also faces similar charges. Officials criticised the delay in alerting authorities and pointed to faulty locks and outdated infrastructure. Sheriff Hutson acknowledged the challenges and vowed her office would emerge stronger.
