The Hidden Truth Behind Nigeria’s Bride Price Demands
This post challenges every Nigerian tribe to confront the real history of bride price. For generations, the payment and ceremonies served one purpose: a verifiable virginity and lineage guarantee sealed with a bloodstained cloth or a symbolic yam if that guarantee failed. Colonial rule and commercialisation warped this practice. Today, families ignore laws capping dowries, demand exorbitant sums and punish those who resist. High bride prices force couples into cohabitation or unpaid relationships, price young men out of marriage and expose women to violence. If we truly honour tradition, we must answer these questions: did the bride’s family protect and guarantee her virginity? Will the cloth appear on the wedding night? Are they ready to return the symbolic yam if the guarantee fails? Until we reclaim the original covenant, what we call culture risks being nothing more than a protection racket.
