ASUU Threatens Indefinite Strike in Seven State Universities Over Unpaid Arrears

ASUU Threatens Indefinite Strike in Seven State Universities Over Unpaid Arrears

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the Benin Zone has warned it will embark on an indefinite strike from the end of July 2026. This action targets seven state-owned universities across Edo, Ondo and Delta States. Prof. Monday Igbafen said union members demand full payment of the consolidated academic tools allowance (CATA) and all other allowances due since January 2026. He highlighted that federal institutions in the zone have already implemented the 2025 agreement, while state governments have not. ASUU members say they have exhausted their patience after months of “trivialisation and disregard” by the state governors, who are also the universities’ visitors. They insist that any further delay in honouring the agreement will provoke a total and comprehensive shutdown of their institutions. The union calls on the governors of Edo, Ondo and Delta States to act immediately to avoid disrupting academic activities.
