Messi Makes History as Oldest Outfield Player in World Cup Final

Messi Makes History as Oldest Outfield Player in World Cup Final — 1 of 2
1 / 2

At 39 years and 25 days, Lionel Messi became the oldest outfield player ever to feature in a World Cup final, breaking Gunnar Gren’s 68-year record. Only Italian goalkeeper Dino Zoff, who was 40 in 1982, had been older in a final. By starting in the 2026 showpiece, Messi also joined Cafu as one of just two players to appear in three different finals. Messi has been in sensational form, contributing eight goals and four assists in seven matches. Argentina reached the final after a late 2–1 comeback win over England, while Spain secured their place with a 2–0 victory against France. Having lost his first final in 2014 and lifted the trophy in 2022, Messi will aim to claim a second World Cup crown at MetLife Stadium.

I'm not convinced age alone defines impact when Dino Zoff achieved it at 40 as goalkeeper, a very different role.

Teams should perhaps adapt veteran players' minutes carefully, ensuring proper rest intervals to maximize performance without risking injury.
