Former Osun Assembly Speaker Blames Leadership Failures, Not Democracy, for Nigeria’s Underdevelopment

Former Osun Assembly Speaker Blames Leadership Failures, Not Democracy, for Nigeria’s Underdevelopment

Mojeed Alabi, former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly and ex-member of the House of Representatives, says Nigeria’s underdevelopment stems from weak leadership and institutions rather than democracy itself. Speaking on a current affairs programme on Eagle FM, he argued that democracy promotes participation, accountability and citizen involvement. He described Nigeria as an emerging democracy that needs ongoing nurturing before it can reach the standards of more advanced systems. Alabi welcomed President Tinubu’s recent admission that many Nigerians have not yet seen the expected benefits of democratic governance. He warned that uninterrupted elections alone do not guarantee consolidation when poverty, insecurity and fragile institutions persist. On security, he linked rising banditry and insurgency to worsening economic conditions. He urged reforms that deliver long-term stability while cushioning citizens immediately, and called for fairness so that both public officials and ordinary Nigerians share in any required sacrifices.

It's telling that Alabi pinpoints leadership, not democracy, yet few address why institutions remain so fragile after decades.

Blaming only weak leadership ignores how flawed elections and party structures undermine institutional strength too.

To strengthen institutions we need transparent recruitment, consistent accountability measures, and civic education at the grassroots level right now.
