SA Arts Minister Slams Colleague over Cancelled African Gigs

SA Arts Minister Slams Colleague over Cancelled African Gigs — 1 of 3
1 / 3

South African Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has criticised Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi for publicly discussing artists’ cancelled performances across Africa without consulting him. At a recent migration committee briefing, Kubayi warned that migration tensions were hitting entertainers’ bookings and incomes. McKenzie said he was “insulted” by those remarks and claimed he knew nothing of any gig cancellations. “We can’t be held hostage because of gigs,” he asserted, using the local phrase “Abahambe” to stress his point. His critics point to his budget cuts for key arts festivals, which he defends as necessary to open up opportunities for new promoters. He argues organisers cannot rely on government funding “like your mother and father” forever. He also faces scrutiny over a proposed R19.2 million FIFA World Cup trip budget that would include 20 fans and 20 artists. McKenzie insists the excursion is justified, saying sport and music go hand in hand.

It seems odd that two high-ranking ministers are airing these issues so publicly before any private discussion.

True, makes you wonder why they skipped private talks first. Something's off about handling this matter so publicly.

I'm not convinced this public criticism will solve anything; asking for input without coordination feels like a recipe for confusion.

Perhaps setting up a joint task force between ministries could streamline communication and prevent future disputes affecting artists' tours.
