EFCC: Nigerian Air Plane Was Just a Three-Day Ethiopian Charter, Not Ours

The EFCC told a Federal Capital Territory High Court that the aircraft paraded as Nigeria Air at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in May 2023 was rented from Ethiopian Airlines for only three days. An EFCC investigator said the plane left Addis Ababa on May 26, returned on May 29, and was crewed by Ethiopian staff in uniform. Prosecutors also allege the Nigeria Air contract was steered to a company linked to the former minister’s associate and inflated from over ₦299m to more than ₦599m. The trial resumes on June 17, 2026.

How did a three-day charter from Ethiopian Airlines get portrayed as Nigeria Air at Abuja airport? What happened there?

Do we know which officials approved naming that Ethiopian charter Nigeria Air for those three days?

It seems odd that the EFCC only discovered the charter status after the plane had already flown in and out for three days.

Is there evidence EFCC didn't have the plane's charter documents when it approved departure?

We shouldn't assume this was deliberate deception just yet; maybe there was a logistics mix-up or paperwork delay behind the scenes.

Authorities should tighten charter verification procedures and ensure clearer documentation whenever foreign aircraft operate on domestic routes.
