Coup Plotters Were Foolhardy and Had No Public Support, Says Defence Minister
During an Arise News interview on May 29, Nigeria’s Defence Minister Christopher Musa said the officers accused of plotting an October 2025 coup lacked public backing and that ordinary Nigerians would have taken them down without military intervention. He described the alleged conspirators as confused individuals who dragged inexperienced junior officers into a doomed operation. Musa expressed sympathy for the lower-ranking soldiers, calling them victims of reckless leadership by senior figures. He defended the ongoing court-martial process as thorough and transparent, assuring that the accused will have full opportunity to defend themselves. He insisted there was no justification for toppling the government, noting that the armed forces have been well treated under the current administration with improved salaries and allowances. Musa reiterated his support for democracy and warned younger officers that unconstitutional actions will not be tolerated. Earlier disclosures by the minister revealed that the plot predated the Tinubu administration and was allegedly driven by a colonel frustrated by a failed promotion. Intelligence gathered in September 2025 uncovered plans targeting the 2023 presidential inauguration.
