Nigerian National Jailed 15 Years in India for Smuggling 2.2kg of Amphetamine
A Special Court in Coimbatore has sentenced a Nigerian national to 15 years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined him ₹1.5 lakh for smuggling banned narcotics. In July 2021, Chennai Zonal NCB officials received intelligence that drugs were being moved by train from Delhi to Coimbatore. Surveillance at the railway station led to the questioning of Ekwin Kingsley Ugochukwu. A luggage search uncovered 2.235 kilograms of amphetamine hidden in eight parcels, with an international market value exceeding ₹1 crore. Interrogation revealed plans to sell the narcotics to youths and IT workers in the city. Authorities filed the charge sheet in January 2022. Officials say they’ve secured convictions in seven cases this year as part of efforts to dismantle drug trafficking syndicates and achieve a “Drug Free India.”
