Is Tinubu a Puppet President? Unpacking the Power Brokers Behind His Rule
In Nigeria’s political theatre, President Bola Tinubu is often portrayed as a master strategist. Yet beneath this image lies a troubling truth: he depends on entrenched power brokers, wealthy elites, and foreign interests. His rise was built on patronage networks and “godfatherism” rather than grassroots independence. Today, every major policy decision seems tailored to appease campaign financiers and external actors, leaving ordinary Nigerians to shoulder the economic fallout of subsidy removals and privatization. Far from breaking with past failures, his administration echoes the policies of his predecessor. Instead of forging a new path, Tinubu appears bound by fragile alliances, regional factions, and the very system his party once exploited. For me, this is a disappointment. Tinubu’s presidency reads not as a bold vision but as a continuation of puppet leadership. Until Nigeria breaks free from these hidden strings, the hope for genuine reform will remain elusive.
