Investigator Faults Selective Prosecution in $6.23m CBN Theft Case

Investigator Faults Selective Prosecution in $6.23m CBN Theft Case

The Director of Public Prosecutions told the Abuja High Court that more than ten people linked to the alleged $6.23 million theft from the CBN’s Abuja branch must be prosecuted. Special Investigator Jim Obazee criticised why only former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele is currently on trial, even though recovered funds and confessions implicate figures like ex-SGF Boss Mustapha, Emefiele’s aide and others. Obazee also highlighted a signed authorisation letter and urged that all involved—living or deceased—be held to account to deter corruption and restore public trust. Justice Hamza Muazu adjourned the matter until October 20, 2026.

Why is the prosecution focusing only on Emefiele when others linked to the $6.23m CBN theft haven't faced charges?

You're right; it feels unfair that just Emefiele is on trial while others avoid charges.

It seems odd that over ten suspects are mentioned by the DPP, yet only one person is standing trial so far.

Maybe the other suspects lack sufficient evidence, so focusing on the former governor first isn't necessarily unfair.

The courts should expedite investigations into the remaining persons to ensure a comprehensive prosecution and restore public confidence quickly.
