Senate Leader Proposes Single Six-Year Term for President and Governors

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele says he will sponsor a constitutional amendment to replace the two-term tenure for presidents and governors with a single six-year term. He announced this plan during an interview in Abuja as part of wider political reform proposals. He urged the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission to publish the salaries and allowances of all public office holders, arguing that transparency would dispel misconceptions about lawmakers’ pay. He noted that legislators do not set their own remuneration. On security, Bamidele defended the Senate’s decision to reject a public probe of military spending in the midst of active operations. He said existing defence oversight committees would continue monitoring procurement and stressed the importance of sustaining public support for the armed forces. He reaffirmed support for the death penalty for convicted kidnappers and updated the status of the anti-terrorism bill nearing final approval. Reflecting on the 10th Senate’s record, he pointed to achievements in economic reform, education, agriculture and boosting non-oil revenue.

To balance stability and accountability, we could pair a single six-year term with stronger midterm performance reviews and transparent benchmarks.
