ICPC Rebuked for Flouting Court Order in El-Rufai’s Release
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission released former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai despite a court order remanding him until Tuesday. Senior lawyer Femi Falana called the move illegal, saying only a court can lift such an order. Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong and veteran journalist Richard Akinnola also questioned how the ICPC granted El-Rufai temporary freedom to attend his mother’s burial without seeking judicial approval. Critics argue this selective enforcement highlights inequality in Nigeria’s justice system. El-Rufai faces 10 counts of corruption, including alleged fraudulent severance payments and unlawful foreign currency deposits. He has pleaded not guilty and is due back in court for his bail application on March 31.
