Study: Second-Generation Nigerian Americans Lead US in Educational Attainment
A recent study published in Socius finds second-generation Nigerian Americans achieve the highest education levels of any racial or ethnic group in the US. They even outperform second-generation Asian Americans. The research covers the period from 2009 to 2019 and examines education and wage outcomes among Black Americans. After adjusting for age, education and disability, the wages of second-generation Nigerian Americans reach parity with those of third-generation white Americans. Authors highlight significant socioeconomic variation within Black American communities. They suggest factors such as ethnicity, gender and generational status drive these differences and call for further research in this area.
