RDI Demands Total Gas Flaring Ban, Warns Fines Fail to Curb Pollution

RDI Demands Total Gas Flaring Ban, Warns Fines Fail to Curb Pollution

The Renevlyn Development Initiative has urged the federal government to outlaw gas flaring, arguing that current penalties are too low to stop oil firms from burning off gas. Data from the Nigerian Oil Spill Monitor shows that companies paid about $646 million in flaring fines in 2025. Volumes dipped between 2020 and 2022 but rose again in recent years. RDI says the $2 per 1,000 SCF penalty simply encourages firms to pay rather than invest in emission controls. It warns of health and environmental harms to host communities and calls for a focus on emission reduction at source to meet Nigeria’s net-zero goals.

How can a total gas flaring ban realistically be enforced, given firms' history of paying fines and continuing operations?

Oh, absolutely! We need tougher penalties and real-time oversight if fines alone can't put out this flaring habit.

What specific monitoring or penalty adjustments could ensure companies truly halt flaring instead of budgeting fines?

I no believe say small fines dey discourage big oil firms from flaring gas when profit margins are huge.

Focusing on stronger oversight and real-time monitoring technology could push oil companies to reduce or eliminate flaring effectively.
