Fulani Leaders Warn US Against Ethnic Scapegoating in Nigeria’s Security Debate

Fulani Leaders Warn US Against Ethnic Scapegoating in Nigeria’s Security Debate

The Concerned Fulani People of Nigeria urged international partners to avoid framing Fulani as the sole source of national insecurity. They warned that unfair narratives could heighten ethnic tensions and breed mistrust. In their statement, the group highlighted past US-linked reports that cautioned against generalising Fulani communities. They argued that current claims linking Fulani identity to widespread violence ignore complex factors like land disputes, environmental pressures and local politics. Pointing to attacks on Fulani settlements under previous administrations, the statement stressed that many Fulani families have lived peacefully in states such as Benue, Plateau and Taraba for generations. It called on both foreign observers and Nigerian authorities to use evidence-based reporting and steer clear of divisive stereotypes.
