What If Herbert Macaulay Had Led Nigeria to Independence?
Imagine Herbert Macaulay living past 1946 and guiding Nigeria into independence. His NCNC was more than a party; it united trade unions, professional bodies and ethnic town unions into an Ogboni-style society that rarely tolerated opposition. Any emerging group would have merged into the NCNC after negotiations, making it unrivalled. By the late 1950s, Dr. Azikiwe’s bid for Western Premiership sparked the rise of the Action Group among Yoruba town unions. Yet if Macaulay had been alive, the AG and the NPC would likely have negotiated terms with the NCNC rather than challenge its dominance. Powerful unions like teachers and railway workers would have reinforced this one-party dynamic. Ultimately, a surviving Macaulay could have prevented Azikiwe’s Western ambitions and steered Nigeria into a single-party system under Northern leadership. The balance of regional power and national unity might have taken a very different turn under his guidance.
