FG Approves Updated Career Structure for NiMet Staff

FG Approves Updated Career Structure for NiMet Staff

The Federal Government has approved a revised Scheme of Service for the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, marking a key milestone in ongoing reforms. A letter from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, dated July 9, 2026, confirmed the new framework. The update aligns NiMet’s career structure with current Federal Public Service policies. It addresses gaps in certain cadres, strengthens progression opportunities, and reflects the agency’s specialized mandates. Officers in junior and intermediate grades must now earn a bachelor’s degree before advancing. This approval follows an April 2026 pay review and updated Conditions of Service that took effect on June 1. These changes are designed to boost human resource capacity and reinforce operational efficiency. As Nigeria’s apex meteorological institution, NiMet provides vital weather and climate services for aviation, agriculture, maritime transport, disaster management and research. The updated scheme is expected to enhance service delivery and support national climate objectives.

Updates look promising, yet years of delays make me skeptical about timely execution and real benefits for staff.

NiMet employees should review the new framework details, align their career goals accordingly, and prepare documentation for any grade changes.
