US Justice Department Probes E. Jean Carroll for Alleged Perjury in Trump Lawsuits
The US Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into former columnist E. Jean Carroll. Prosecutors are examining whether she lied under oath about outside funding in depositions tied to her sexual assault and defamation suits against Donald Trump. Carroll first sued over claims that Trump sexually abused her in a New York department store in the 1990s. She later filed a defamation case after he denied the allegations in 2019. In a 2022 deposition, Carroll stated she received no outside support, but it was later revealed that a nonprofit funded by Reid Hoffman covered some of her legal fees. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche recused himself due to his past role on Carroll’s appeal. The matter has been referred to federal prosecutors in Chicago, where the funding organization is based. Carroll continues to appeal combined damages of over $88 million awarded in both cases.
