Jonathan Urges Stronger Local Content to Drive Nigeria’s Industrial Growth
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has praised progress in local participation in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. He highlighted the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act he signed, saying it created a legal framework for technology transfer, job creation and growth of Nigerian businesses. Speaking at the inaugural Sweet Crude Dialogue in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, he recalled how a visit to China’s oil museum shaped his belief in local manufacturing. He noted that although Nigeria discovered oil before China, it still relies heavily on imports for industry equipment. Jonathan urged Nigeria to use its hydrocarbon resources to build resilient industries rather than focus solely on crude exports. He stressed that local production of equipment and consumables is key to job creation and economic diversification. He also reflected on his role in the Niger Delta amnesty programme and called for continued attention to host communities and sub-national government efforts to improve living standards in oil-producing regions.
