Osun Deputy Speaker Urges Voter Education for Credible Elections
The Deputy Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly highlighted the importance of educating citizens on their voting responsibilities. Speaking at a NUJ forum in Osogbo, his spokesperson noted that lawmakers draft electoral laws and oversee their implementation, but journalists and civil society must help sensitise the electorate. He warned that a ‘do or die’ attitude among candidates and supporters threatens peace at polling units. Citing post-primary violence and flawed party processes, he called for a truly independent electoral commission and judiciary to build public trust. The Deputy Speaker also reviewed the Assembly’s oversight successes, from rehabilitated roads to upgraded health centres. He urged press organisations to reintroduce political clubs in secondary schools to cultivate an informed generation of voters.
