World Athletics Rejects Favour Ofili’s Bid to Compete for Turkey

World Athletics Rejects Favour Ofili’s Bid to Compete for Turkey — 1 of 2
1 / 2

World Athletics Nationality Review Panel has denied Favour Ofili’s application to change her sporting nationality from Nigeria to Turkey. Ofili had announced her intent in May 2025 after missing the Tokyo Olympic 200m due to delays by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the National Athletic Doping Control. She dismissed claims that her decision was financially driven. The panel cited its eligibility rules and said the transfer would compromise key regulations. Ofili remains free to compete in club and one-day meeting events but cannot represent Turkey in world or Olympic competitions.

I get the frustration, but international bodies must follow strict eligibility rules, not individual federation delays.

It's odd that double Olympic runner Ofili can't represent Turkey while Nigeria's own paperwork delays went unpunished.

I'm not convinced changing allegiances solves anything if the core issue is federation mismanagement at home.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria should streamline its clearance process to prevent top talents from seeking nationality changes.
