Hezbollah Deputy Leader Vows to Fight as He Urges Lebanon to Cancel US Talks With Israel
In a televised address, Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Naim Qassem, urged the Lebanese government to pull out of planned talks in Washington with Israeli officials. He rejected direct negotiations with what he called the “usurping Israeli entity” and demanded a “heroic stance” by cancelling the session. The meeting in Washington involves the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to the United States and aims to explore formal negotiations between the two nations. Qassem dismissed the effort as futile and said any engagement must have broad national consensus in Lebanon. Since hostilities began on March 2, more than 2,000 people have died and over a million have been displaced in Lebanon. Beirut has focused on securing a ceasefire, while Israel insists it will only agree to a lasting peace after dismantling Hezbollah’s arsenal.
