Confronting Nigeria’s Insecurity: From Denial to Practical Solutions

Nigeria is under siege from terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and organized crime. Every new attack provokes outrage. Yet we still avoid an honest conversation about the root causes. Insecurity in Nigeria did not begin under one administration or one party. Successive governments have battled militancy, Boko Haram, communal clashes and transnational criminal networks. Deep factors such as poverty, weak institutions, corruption and arms proliferation continue to fuel violence. Political actors often turn tragedy into campaign ammunition. Citizens celebrate bad news and dismiss successes as propaganda. Ethnic stereotypes and community silence help criminals thrive while intelligence gathering suffers. We need pragmatic solutions: modernized intelligence, accountable community policing, stronger border control, advanced technology and faster justice. Political unity and active civic participation must replace cynicism. Nigeria can win this battle if we stand together for real progress.
