Canada Grants Over 3,400 Nigerian Asylum Claims in 2025, 21,573 Still Awaiting Decisions

Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board approved 3,463 asylum claims by Nigerian applicants in 2025 out of 6,765 submissions. Of the 5,039 cases decided, 1,377 were rejected, 46 were abandoned, and 153 were withdrawn or concluded under other outcomes, giving a 68% approval rate—higher than in past years. Nigeria ranked among the top five countries of origin for asylum seekers, alongside India, Haiti, Iran, and Mexico. Applicants must demonstrate a risk of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a specific group. Successful claimants can remain in Canada and pursue permanent residency, while those denied may face removal. In total, Canada handled 107,802 asylum applications in 2025, approving 14,619 and rejecting 7,944.

What do you think the 68% approval rate says about Canada's screening process for Nigerian asylum seekers this year?

Are you wondering if the 68% rate reflects stricter vetting or more efficient processing?

I'm not sure the approval rate reflects screening thoroughness; many other variables shape those outcomes.

It's notable that over 21,000 applications are still pending while only a bit more than half of total submissions were approved.

I'm not convinced the numbers reflect improvements in safety back home rather than stricter border controls.

Consider gathering accurate documentation and legal advice early to speed up your asylum claim process in Canada.
