Oyo Governor Orders Registration of Vigilante Groups under Executive Order 001
Governor Seyi Makinde has signed Executive Order 001 of 2026 to regulate vigilante outfits and community security organisations across Oyo State. The directive aims to bring these groups within recognised legal boundaries and strengthen public safety efforts. Under the new rule, any security association with more than five members must register, document and submit to state supervision within 72 hours. The Office of the Special Adviser on Security, alongside the Nigeria Police Force and the NSCDC, will enforce compliance and sanction non-compliant groups. Makinde also cautioned against ethnic profiling or division and assured residents of ongoing efforts to secure the release of abducted students and teachers in Oriire LGA. He urged citizens to report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands.
