Trump’s Praise of Tinubu’s Security Leadership Busts ‘Doomsday Obidients’ Myth

Some Nigerians have built reputations as arbiters of only bad news. They magnify any negative report and look for ways to taint the positive. A recent letter from former US President Donald Trump to President Bola Tinubu challenges that doom-and-gloom narrative. In his July 6, 2026 message, Trump commended Tinubu’s “decisive leadership” and highlighted the US-Nigeria Defence Cooperation Roadmap. He also noted plans for US Special Operations Forces to train Nigerian troops. Earlier reports confirmed a joint US-Nigerian mission that eliminated an Islamic State leader in the Lake Chad Basin. This shows the partnership goes beyond rhetoric and is yielding real security cooperation. Nigeria still faces serious security challenges. But dismissing these international efforts as propaganda ignores the facts. Trump’s letter punctures the claim that Tinubu is isolated and abandoned on the world stage.

It feels odd that Trump's endorsement of Tinubu's security record suddenly silences the critics who rarely acknowledge any positive outcomes.

Sure, Trump praises Tinubu, but does one letter really redefine our security realities or just play to foreign audiences?

Maybe we need to focus on actual crime statistics and local policing results instead of relying on political endorsements from abroad.
