INEC Redeploys Osun REC Over Partisanship Allegations

INEC Redeploys Osun REC Over Partisanship Allegations

The Independent National Electoral Commission has redeployed its Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, Mutiu Agboke, after petitions alleging partisanship were sent to INEC chairman Joash Amupitan. Opposition parties, including the APC and the NNPP, had called for his removal ahead of the August 15, 2026, governorship poll. Meanwhile, a coalition called Osun Democrats for Democracy praised INEC’s neutrality in the election preparations. Agboke confirmed his transfer to Ondo State and thanked stakeholders for their support during his tenure in Osun. The move comes as political activities intensify in the lead-up to the governorship election.

Do you think moving the Osun REC will calm partisan tension, or might it just send the issue to another state?

Swapping the REC feels like musical chairs with controversies; tensions might just hop to the next venue.

It's interesting that both APC and NNPP pushed for this transfer, yet we still lack clarity on the specific allegations.

Switching commissioners won't solve the root issues unless INEC also improves transparent processes and accountability for all states.

Perhaps INEC should publish clear guidelines for commissioner conduct and an independent review of complaints before redeployment decisions.
