Floodwaters Destroy Makeshift Namnai Bridge in Taraba, Stranding Hundreds

Floodwaters Destroy Makeshift Namnai Bridge in Taraba, Stranding Hundreds

Heavy rains caused the River Namnai to swell and wash away a temporary bridge in Taraba State. The makeshift structure had replaced a collapsed federal bridge along the Jalingo–Wukari highway two years ago. It served as a vital crossing for motorists and charged between ₦3,000 and ₦20,000 per vehicle. After the collapse, dozens of trucks and hundreds of smaller vehicles were left stranded on both riverbanks. Passengers now wade across on foot before finding transport on the other side. Meanwhile, slow progress on a permanent replacement awarded by the North East Development Commission three months ago leaves commuters at risk until December’s projected completion date.

It's surprising that a temporary solution lasted two years before failing under heavy rains.

Calling it a vital crossing doesn't excuse poor planning that made this structure vulnerable from the start.

Local authorities should set up emergency river crossings and plan for more resilient bridge designs ahead of future floods.
