Should 18-Year-Olds Have Equal Voting Power in Nigeria?
I’m puzzled that an 18-year-old has the same vote as someone over 50. At 18, many are still in school, learning to manage allowances and struggling with exams. How much do they really know about presidential candidates or party records? When I was 22 in Jonathan’s era, my peers and I barely understood Buhari’s track record. We voted based on online chatter and friends’ opinions. If we were that naive at 22, could 18- to 20-year-olds make an informed choice on Obi, Atiku, or Sowore? With a huge youth population online, parties could mobilize young voters easily. But is it reasonable to give the same electoral weight to taxpayers and non-taxpayers? Maybe I’m wrong, but should Nigeria raise the voting age or introduce maturity benchmarks?
