76-Year-Old Grandfather Gets 40-Year Jail Term for Trafficking 340kg of Cannabis
Francis Omofe, a 76-year-old grandfather from Kaduna State, was arrested in Abuja on June 18, 2024, for transporting 340.8kg of cannabis sativa in a Nissan Frontier bearing a police number plate. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency charged him under two counts: possession and transportation of a narcotic substance, contrary to Sections 19 and 11(p) of the NDLEA Act. Justice James Omotosho found the prosecution’s evidence beyond reasonable doubt and convicted him on both counts. Despite pleas for mercy, the judge imposed a 15-year term for possession and a 25-year term for transportation. The sentences will run concurrently from the date of his arrest, resulting in a total of 25 years’ imprisonment. The ruling was described as necessary to serve as a national deterrent.
