Russian Tu-22M3 Backfire Bomber Crashes in Siberian Training Flight; Crew Ejects Safely

Russian Tu-22M3 Backfire Bomber Crashes in Siberian Training Flight; Crew Ejects Safely

A Tu-22M3 strategic bomber crashed on Monday in Siberia’s Irkutsk region during a training flight, the Russian Defence Ministry said. All four crew members safely ejected and no injuries were reported on the ground. The Soviet-era supersonic bomber, which can carry Kh-22 and hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, was flying without weapons when preliminary reports pointed to engine failure near the village of Kamenka. Unverified social media videos showed the aircraft diving into a wooded area, raising a large column of smoke. Local fire crews extinguished the blaze and hospitalised the crew with non-life-threatening injuries. Regional authorities have opened an investigation into what caused the crash.

It's surprising a bomber that's supposed to be reliable still uses 50-year-old airframes for critical training missions.

Upgrading or retiring old Tu-22M3 fleets and investing in newer simulators could minimize such crashes and ensure crew safety.
