FG and Jonathan Move to Dismiss Suit Barring Ex-President from 2027 Race
A fresh legal battle has emerged over former President Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility for the 2027 election. Abuja lawyer Johnmary Jideobi urged the Federal High Court to rule that Jonathan has served two terms and cannot run again. Jonathan’s lead counsel, SAN Chris Uche, and the Attorney General’s office argued the suit lacks merit. They say past rulings in Jonathan’s favour and non-retroactive constitutional amendments bar the case and have asked for dismissal with costs. Justice Peter Lifu will deliver judgment on May 26, also ruling on a bias challenge. Political watchers say the litigation has intensified speculation about Jonathan’s potential return to active politics.
