UN Warns: 85% of Attacks on Journalists Go Unpunished
The UN Secretary-General has revealed that 85% of crimes against journalists are never investigated or punished. He made this remark to mark World Press Freedom Day on May 3. He stressed that press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy and that the media serves as a vital public watchdog. He recalled the 1991 Windhoek Declaration, which led the UN to dedicate the day to defending media freedom worldwide. The UN chief warned that economic pressures, new technologies and deliberate disinformation are putting journalism under unprecedented strain. He said that when reliable information erodes, mistrust grows, public debate is distorted and social cohesion weakens. He called for stronger protection of media workers who face censorship, surveillance, legal harassment and even death. He noted that journalists often risk their lives in conflict zones and urged global efforts to ensure they can report the truth safely.
