Okon Reflects On Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 Loss to Mexico: ‘It Was a Tough Game’

Okon Reflects On Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 Loss to Mexico: ‘It Was a Tough Game’

South Africa defender Ime Okon admitted it was a rough start as Bafana Bafana fell 2-0 to co-hosts Mexico in their World Cup opener. Julian Quiñones struck in the fifth minute, and Raúl Jiménez headed in a second in the 67th. The contest turned even more challenging when Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off, leaving South Africa with nine men. Okon urged the team to put the defeat behind them and focus on their next match. Making his World Cup debut, the centre-back played the full 90 minutes but called it one he’d rather forget. South Africa now look ahead to facing the Czech Republic in Group A next Thursday.

Absolutely, Mexico's intensity made Bafana scramble, and they just couldn't click in attack.

Ime Okon calling it a rough start feels like an understatement given Mexico's quick goals within just over an hour's play.

I'm not convinced it was just a rough start; conceding two goals hints at tactical flaws more than bad luck.

They should focus on strengthening defensive coordination and quick recovery drills before the next match to prevent early goals.
