US Proposes Hikes on Nigerian Exports Over Forced Labour Concerns
Nigeria is among about 60 countries facing possible new US trade penalties for alleged failures to block imports linked to forced labour. The US Trade Representative completed a Section 301 probe and found several economies have not adequately banned goods made with forced labour. Under the proposal, affected nations could face an extra 10 percent or 12.5 percent duties on top of the existing 10 percent baseline tariff. For Nigeria, that would push the total rate to as high as 27.5 percent on exports to the US. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said America will no longer tolerate unfair competition enabled by weak enforcement. The plan is open for public comments before any measures take effect.
