INEC Appeals Court Ruling Striking Out Primaries Timelines
The Independent National Electoral Commission has challenged a Federal High Court judgment that removed its power to set deadlines for party primaries ahead of the 2027 elections. INEC filed a notice of appeal after the Abuja court ruled that sections 29, 82 and 84(1) of the Electoral Act do not grant it authority to prescribe primary timetables. The suit was brought by the Youth Party in March. Speaking for INEC, counsel Alex Izinyon argued the case was hypothetical and academic. Under INEC’s revised schedule, parties must submit membership registers by May 10, hold primaries and finalise candidate changes by the end of May.
