Ex-Middlesbrough Defender Anthony Renton Dies Aged 27 After Brave Nine-Year Leukaemia Battle

Anthony Renton, a product of the Middlesbrough academy, has passed away at 27 after bravely battling leukaemia for almost nine years. He signed his first professional contract with the club in 2017 but was diagnosed with leukaemia soon after. Despite his illness, Renton remained a pillar of positivity and moved into coaching, spending time with Middlesbrough’s academy and later at South Park Rangers. Middlesbrough honoured him as the inaugural winner of their Academy Alumni Award in March 2026. Club statements and messages from supporters praised his dedication to young players and his inspirational character. His commitment to football development left a lasting legacy across Teesside. All thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone who knew “Anth” during this difficult time.
