Did Abraham, Isaac and Jacob Know God as Yahweh?
Exodus 6:3 says God appeared to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as El-Shaddai, and that His name, Yahweh, was not made known to them. However, Genesis 22:14 says Abraham named a place “Yahweh-Yireh,” meaning “The Lord will provide.” Genesis 28:13 also records God introducing Himself to Jacob as Yahweh in a dream. How should these passages be understood together? Did the patriarchs know the name Yahweh, or does Exodus 6:3 mean they had not yet experienced the full significance of that name?
